A Wayfinder Schools interview with Residential Program student Carlos Andrade, Camden Campus, October 2013

CARLOS

WS: What made you decide to come to Wayfinder Schools?

CA: I wasn’t that interested at first.  But it’s another opportunity and it seemed like another nine months of school would benefit me.  So far it’s been a great choice.

WS: What have you enjoyed most about your Wayfinder Schools experience so far?

CA: How fast I’ve connected with staff and how they treat you.  They don’t yell at you if you do something wrong, they talk to you about it. I’ve learned a lot from the way they discipline.

Being here is pretty awesome, I think it’s one of the best choices I’ve made in my life so far.  We do a lot of fun activities along with the learning piece.  I got shown how to open a bank account during class.  It was awesome.

WS: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned so far this year?

CA: Not all people are the same.

WS: What’s the favorite meal you’ve cooked so far at school and why?

CA: Chicken Caesar Salad. I made the homemade Caesar dressing. It was delicious, and everyone thought the chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned and it made me feel really good about my cooking.  And a Thai dish. I love Thai food.

WS: How did you decide on your work/internship site?

CA: Initially I was going to work at an antique shop but Emily asked me to check out Seton School, which is actually kind of fantastic.

WS: Tell me about your experiences volunteering or on an ELE.

CA: The rock climbing ELE was great.  I’m terrified of heights but I felt so confident with everyone encouraging me to do something that scared the living heck out of me. I was super happy with myself and super proud.  Another thing like about being here- people don’t push you, they encourage you.

In terms of volunteering, The Camden International Film Festival was exciting. I talked to some of the directors and producers-very intelligent people.

WS: What do you hope to get out of your experience at Wayfinder Schools?

CA: More sense of responsibility-which I’ve been getting.  Staying in touch with staff.  They’ve grown on me and I already consider them family. Staff is so willing to reach out and share their skills with us, which is amazing and compassionate.

WS: What are your hopes and plans for after graduation?

CA: I want to be a teacher, an elementary or middle school history teacher.  I like history and government-all the information you can get. There’s so much I still haven’t absorbed…I want to keep absorbing.

WS: What would you like people to know about Wayfinder Schools?

CA: It’s not the typical high school experience.  It’s most definitely a promising opportunity.  Anyone who has the opportunity to come here should.  This place can change your life dramatically within the first month.  It will make you feel so much better about your life and your future.  It’s not going to be easy though.  It’s very challenging, but a good challenge.

WS: What would you like the world to know about you?

CA: I’m a caring person. I’m a very patient person.  If somebody said they needed help with something, I’m always willing to help. I care a lot about my peers and educators.  I’m goofy, silly, funny, but when I need to be I can be very professional.  I like to bring all these things to my schooling.
