Allen Fernald, Ballroom Prodigy

Posted on Tuesday April 17, 2012

Allen Fernald was born a dancer!

A true prodigy of the ballroom, Allen Fernald’s dancing career began at the tender age of twelve. During the war years of the 1940s, he performed on stage and in the Walter Shaulk Studio Review.

Allen subsequently attended college at the University of Maine where he acquired the sobriquet of “Alley” in the sweaty smoke-filled rooms of Alpha Tau Omega and found his longtime dancing partner—and love of his life—the demure Sally Carroll. Always practical, Sally convinced him to give up his raucous jitterbugging ways to pursue better-paying (albeit staid) ballrooms in the big city where they raised their three children.

Allen pursued a career in publishing, rising through the ranks of Holt, Rinehart & Winston and later CBS, ultimately becoming their senior vice president and head of the college publishing division. Envious colleagues remarked that his light step served him well in New York but the always-energetic Allen changed tempo and made a home on the coast of Maine.

By day, he was DownEast magazine’s owner, but at night, Allen’s heart was always tapping, swinging, and doing the salsa with Sally. Finally in 2007 Allen gave up his day job to follow his dream fox-trotting around the globe.

Allen and Tessa Antolini will dazzle at this year's Dancing with the Local Stars!

In their nearly fifty-six years as partners, Allen and Sally have performed in the world’s finest venues: New York City, San Francisco, London, Paris, Rome and (of course) the Camden Yacht Club: always graceful, always in each other’s arms.

Today the pair is a regular feature in the ballrooms of the world’s finest cruise liners from Cunard and Grand Circle. They come to Dancing with the Local Stars fresh from an extended sold-out engagement on the M/S River Melody out of Amsterdam.

Allen will grace the stage of the Camden Opera House for this year’s Dancing with the Local Stars on April 27, with Swing & Sway Dancing’s Tessa Antolini!
