June News 2020 - Gearing Up for Graduation and Black Lives Matter
This year we will graduate ten students from Knox, Lincoln, Waldo, Sagadahoc, Cumberland and Androscoggin counties.
This year's celebrations will look different than past years, but will still honor the significant accomplishments of these young Mainers. On June 10th and 12th, a caravan of teachers' cars will drive to students' homes to deliver diplomas, caps and gowns, and graduation treats. There will be a 15 minute outdoor celebration at each student's home.
When it is safe for us to all come together in person, we will host traditional graduation ceremonies for our students, their families and friends, and our entire Wayfinder family. Stay tuned for those dates and details!
In the meantime, please join us in congratulating Chynna, Savanah, Sarenna, Candace, Shelby, Haley, Elizabeth, Devon, Kristina and Olivia on their upcoming graduation. You can read more about our grads HERE!
Thoughts on this Past Week
We stand in support of those advocating for racial and social justice and systemic change here in Maine and across the country. We stand in support of Black Lives Matter. We always strive for equity and justice in our own work, and for a curriculum that matches our ideals and goals; a curriculum that encourages critical thinking, compassion, community involvement and advocacy. Here are some resources we've been looking at lately:
Anti-Racism Resources for White People
Black Owned Maine
Black Owned Maine is a great resource highlighting Maine black-owned businesses. They are continuing to update their directory every day to help residents locate these businesses in their communities.
Raising our Voices
Wayfinder student Katelynn and her daughter took part in a peaceful protest earlier this week. When asked about the experience Katelynn said, “It was the most powerful and incredible thing I’ve ever taken part in!" We always encourage our students to find their voice and to stand up for what they believe. Proud of you Katelynn!
Our Summer Reading List
Here are some of the books we've pulled from our shelves to read or re-read in the coming months. We hope you'll join us!
